As you know I visit and take part in the forums on Wetcanvas. I love the weekend drawing events-- and the many new webinars on the wetcanvas live. The most recent one given by Larry Sailer. His last session was about the importance of 120 paintings....

Wetcanvas Weekend Events for January

Here are my entries for the weekend events for January at WetCanvas.
Starting from the beginning of the month.
Maureen aka Charliesmum hosted the event on January 7th
First did a quick 30 minute sketch of a few of the tourists in my brown paper sketch pad A4 using Derwent sketch pencils.

The second is a image manipulation of one of the sheep image experimanting with textures and blending modes,,,,the texture used comes from a great collection of free textures by Jerry Jones aka skeletalmess. I used old canvas 5

First Critique since Art School Days

I am really enjoying my new art workshop under the direction of Heleni Shamai. Tomorrow will be a really big day .... a group critique.. Each of us are bringing 4 works to take part...Haven't had a critique since my art school days at RISD .. Haven't chosen exactly what to bring... I just started this workshop mid-October and mainly have been working on sketches and oil on paper..... I will probably bring the first of my oil on panel portraits plus some oil on paper sketches.....

The first one more or least realistically... with many rubbings out and building on...the scrubbing was left and gave a textured effect to the painting . Sorry for bad photo seems like a glare on right hand side....

The second variation of the same theme using blocked plain areas in a graphic rendition. This is a WIP and don't know if it will be included in the critique.

There will be a third in the series.....

WDE Events December

End of 2010 and the beginning of 2011!!! This month I took part in all five events!!!! I really feel that taking part and committing to doing is important. Some come out OK and some not so well... but I feel more enriched in the process and it's one of the things that I hope to continue in the coming year!!!

IMPORTANCE that is my word for the coming year... and ART and my process are at the top of my list.
I want to thank all that with their commenting have really encouraged me. Although the platform for these events is not for critiques, I have my art workshop for that, I really appreciate the encouraging feedback.

In my new art workshop I prepared several portrait sketches on various paper formats for further work in oils and color.... Heleni told me this stands on its own and not to add any paint.... the sketches were done without putting in any background elements.

Based on a photo taken by my daughter or son-in-law a few years ago at the outside Rubinstein piano in the Amminadav forest.

I have posted in my photostream some images I took several years ago of the Rubinstein memorial piano in the forest in my Jerusalem set. Included the reference image I used for my sketch.

Life Class ---- A first after a LONG time

This past Tuesday I was invited by my former art instructor, Dov, to join his evening class because he had book a model for a life class. I haven't done sketching from a live model since I left art school ..about a million years ago, so that although I knew I would be very tired with my art workshop in the morning and my Petanque game in the late afternoon I felt I couldn't miss this opportunity.

The model was due to arrive at 7:00PM so we first did some warm ups taking turns being the sitter,

Here are the results. All done on newsprint 50x70 cm using brown charcoal stick.

I was quite pleased with the results after such a long time.... I didn't do any measurements during the sketching time ... concentrated more on catching the pose and filling the page so now looking I find some lack of proportions... rather smallish heads and larger bodies.....My favorite is the last one although I had a problem with the fore handed arm... either she moved or I moved my eye view.... probably the later. Really had a good time and hope they have another session soon.

Getting Creative-Breaking Out of the Box

Yesterday was a really active day... so much going on. Art workshop in the morning, Petanque in the afternoon, and a life class in the evening.....A lot has been written on how to develop more creativity and to try to get out of the BOX... well this morning in my art workshop we did just that.... First instead of setting ourselves up in our usual spots, funny how everyone has them, we positioned ourselves in a huge circle around the walls of the auditorium. Heleni then described what we were to do.... first we all brought drawing stuff... charcoals/pencils boards/paper etc....
The exercise was in 4 stages. Each stage we were told what to draw... in 5 MINUTES
Phase 1 man woman man+woman
Phase 2 bird ball bird+ball
Phase 3 chair flame chair+flame
Phase 4 man+chair+bird
All drawn from absolutely no references, from our heads. .One other instruction was to get the work to a finished stage. You can well imagine the groans.... I worked first on 100x70 cm cutting board with a charcoal stick and then on newsprint paper!. After each phase we turned our easels around and Heleni gave a quick critique of our works, Some were pretty amazing. Even those that had non drawing skills came through with flying colors.... because mainly it was a question of "concept" more than of the actual subject,
I not going to post all the images..... the first phase was was pretty good....then man less than the other two...

Second phase was a flop for me... and for most the ball the biggest challenge for most and only a very few got out of the box for this,,,

Phase 3 Only my chair went well, flame was really nothing special as was chair+flame.... flame was another problem for most.

Phase 5 worked out fairly well...

Bottom line: It was a very productive and tiring art session but really worth the efforts Kudos to Heleni!!!!
Next creative class in a month will be with COLOR

Getting Back to Photoshop

Since I have been putting most of my creative juices into traditional methods,painting and sketching, my photoshop skills have really gone down..... hard to imagine after doing 2 books by Katrin Eismann with an online study-group, but there it is... what you don't do you seem to forget.
Please notice on the right side of the blog a little button to a free e-course fro elements and higher photoshop programs. I am doing round 2 but you can pre-register for round 3 which will start December 6th. This has been a great boost for me and I am really enjoying getting back to some digital work. I hope some of this will be integrated in my traditional work.... Not going to post images but here is a link to some of the stuff skinny-mini Not much there but have dig into my photo library for stuff to work with. Did use a traditional sketch in the manipulation process....just to see what happens.... love to work with textures and have always been a bit afraid of added text.

Art workshop Tuesdays Nov 2 Nov 9

In my art workshop I continued to do sketches on paper but this time to be painted in oil. I was a little apprehensive about this process. Up till now I really wasn't happy about the painting part. I couldn't seem to get a hold on color and making them work. Heleni, my instructor, suggested I work with a two color palette. I used yellow ochre and ultramarine blue and white. In a few I added the use of white and black crayon. Seems I fall back on the drawing part. Hope soon to drawing with my paint brush.

Since this my trip to US later part of march and probably before that...:( I haven't been in any creative mode.... and the little I did do haven't posted...:( ... As usual I woke up VERY early and saw that the WDE images were already posted for this weekend,,,, 7th of May... did a quick digital sketch..... using my wacum tablet and digital pencil and digital crayon.... about an hour... loved the flow of the hills in the reference image.

Edut-Testimony Program Covers

This summer my art teacher Dov Segev referred me to the Yahud-Monosson city to illustrate a program for Edut-Testimony Theatre. This is a program for high school students and Holocaust survivors to meet and act out the survivors stories. This year Ezra and Irit Dagan worked with the students at the Yahud-Monosson Jr High School. Here are the illustrations that appeared on the program cover and the invitations to the production.

The first illustration was based on a oil painting I made of a forest. Cropping and inverting the colors in photo shop... I then added some faces and other images fro the Holocaust.

The back cover photo collage was made up of images from the families of survivors that took part in the program. The whole program in PDF format can be seen here. The top image sketch taken from a photo from March of the Living.

My granddaughter Mor just returned from Poland where she visited many of the camps.

Decided it was about time I got to doing some drawing sketching and what better place then the weekend drawing event at Wet Canvas. This weekend's host is RubyRedDog.
Here are a few quick sketches done in my A5 sketch pad.

All done with 2B mechanical pencil... Really like this new sketch pad... paper is 98 grams and has a nice texture. Will have to see how it takes my crayons!!!

Hello World Member Challenge

One of the forums I take part in is"Hello World" forum. It's a small group mainly interested in photo-shop and other photo editors, study groups. Some of the books being studied are Katrin Eismann's books on restoration, darkroom, and compositing and masking. Hello World is a great place to meet and show off our latest shoots.. pets, software, camera tips, and anything else under the sun... take a look around and join us..

This month Krisse proposed a challenge of fall colors giving two examples from a stock photo site called Freerange .
Everyone is invited to try their hand at it. I decided that it may be a good idea to have a Flikr group so that we can view all the entries together.. I re-learned the use of the art history brush... which I think will be a great tool for my regular painting projects.

Used basically two sources for the art history brush... one that I used a underpainting filter and the original. Made two paint layers.. first with a large brush from the underpainting source and then a smaller brush using the original for putting in more details.

My Photography--Image to Painting

Haven't done much photography work of late.... just family stuff and all.... but I have posted a group of photos on the Wet Canvas reference library....

Recently noticed the many comments on my images and to my surprise a watercolor painting was done from one of the images taken in the alleys of Old Jaffa.
Here is the reference image....

My art class went for an outing to the alleys of old Jaffa last spring 2008... didn't do much sketching... was busy capturing it all on camera...

The painting is done by Jack Steele.The painting can be seen on his website! Love the sun drenched colors. Really happy that someone used my image for inspiration.

Thanks Robert for the great group of images... I know you asked for COLOR but thought of doing some sketches and it has been ages since I used my Wacum tablet so started to do the references in B&W patterns... maybe that is Kosher for the pattern challenge.....horses are way out of my comfort zone as are portraits... Sascha looks a bit older..

These were all done free hand on the computer using one pencil called "vin pencil" that I got from the web pencil a few years back. Pencil width 4 px at 70% opacity... on 300dpi image. Each was done on its own layer. each took about 20 -to one hour.... didn't keep track on each one.... really wanted to get them ALL done... I really had a great time with these and realized that I should use this tool more in planning traditional works. My only drawback with digital is that its NOT hard copy.... and you really need a good printer to get quality prints... so it just sits on the computer....

The cone flower was done without water but used a blending stick. After taking the picture I feel the upper right petals should be much lighter.... to go back and try to lift some off with water???? I will let it rest for a few days!!!Leave ell enough alone.!!!

The hills was done with some water and more crayon layers... sorry about the sky... I felt it was much too yellow so carefully lifted it off ... but its still buckling and some paper got lifted as well... will put it under some heavy books...this was a fix I HAD to do!!!

This was a real challenge for me...couldn't get the figure done properly... this was third attempt. The boat is off..and left oar is crooked... 20x15 cm canvas using Caran D'Ache Neocolor I oil/wax crayons.. with added medium and a little oil pencil.

Thanks Gail for the wonderful opportunity to visit Tibet!!! Was fancinated by the folds of the red fabric of the Monk against the mottled foliage. I do wish I could learn to work a bit slower....maybe I could get more control over the crayons and water.

With #1 I felt I had put too much crayons and it was a bit heavy so tried to lift some off with water and paper toweling....UGH!!! so I gave it a real bath... and tried to re-do....Should have left well enough alone!!!!

#2 after the bath, dried and pressed under heavy books... about another 3/4 of an hour...I like the background but that's all... All in the spirt of WDE!!!

Monk #3 Did a redo from suggestions I received of the faded #2 Next time I will learn to leave well enough alone!!!

Yellow catus was started but didn't like the results so soaked most off and tried again after it dried....less than an hour....I liked the dark and light patterns the cactus made but painting didn't turn out the way I planned...

This is another seascape done in oils on canvas pad 11.5x8.125". The reference photo was taken by my daughter of my grandson and son-law at the beach. I fell in love with the spontaneity of the scene. Painting figures and especially those you know is quite stressful....you want to at least get some likeness but also keep the work from being too overworked. This photo is not the finished piece.... I forgot to photograph the finished one before I gave it to my daughter. Will add it later...

This was done for the Different Strokes for Different Folks bi-weekly challenge. Reference image can be found here. It was a double challenge for me because I wanted to learn more about wet on wet techniques. Up till now my oils have been more or less done by layers. I like to work in a more spontaneous way so I will have to find my way between the two different methods.

Took a print of the reference image that I cropped and changed a bit to my art class where I seem to have more confidence. Done on a canvas pad 11.75"x8"

This is the beginning of a new oil painting. The references for this are a photo I took of a small wood area near a beach in Cape Cod. I added the nymph type figure in the woods. It still has a bit of work to complete... hope to get that done next class.

This is an oil painting I did from one of my photos that I took In Romania. The town was Sighisoara in Transylvania. This was the town where Vlad III, the character that inspired Stoker' novel of Count Dracula. It is a very picturesque village and was in the process of being restored when we visited in 2000.
The painting is 50x40cm'20"x15.75"

Oil/wax crayons with turpentine wash on a small 20 x 14.5 canvas. Found this canvas in a $ store in Jerusalem's central bus station....I am certainly going to buy a few more!!!!

The colors are a bit too bright ... am going to see if I can fix it in Photoshop!!!

Decided to try About Painting monthly challenge. I am always looking for some new challenge to help stimulate my creative journey. I hope to continue with WDE's on Wet Canvas but have decided to spread my wings a bit. My previous post I posted my first entry in Karin Jurick' blog.

This month's challenge is a portrait of a chair. This past Saturday we had a family picnic in Gan Yehoshua and set up a chair portrait for a reference for this challenge.

This is about 12.75" x 10" Canson paper... using Caran D'Ache Neocolor I crayons.

I think I should have made a tighter crop on the chair and less of the scene. It may be rejected on that basis...but I did have fun doing this and am at last getting more familiar with these crayons.

PS... Just received the rejection notice.... may try for a closer crop...!!!!

I took a better photograph today outside... the previous one was done inside with low light on a tripod. I also worked in the sky to deepen the color.

Different Strokes ---Challenge

Well I guess it took me more than a weekend to start on this challenge. Different Strokes from Different Folks is a blog that Karin Jurick has set up where she posts a reference image once a week or bi-weekly. I am glad that I found this new place to post my work and further develop my artist skills.

This bi-weekly challenge reference was a rugged well used pair of boots. This was done on coffee colored Canson paper using Neocolor I crayon by Caran D'Ache.

This photo was taken in doors under low light using a tripod... I took a new one today under natural light outside...what a difference a little sun can make!

Its amazing how one blog leads to another and you discover a whole new network of art bloggers and new challenges. When you get to a new blog you enjoy its always a good idea to check the profile. On the profile there is usually a list of blogs that that blogger follows. That is how I stumbled upon 2 new art/sketch challenges that I may try along with WDE

The first one I found from My French Easel I was checking out one of the blogs he follows and found Jerry Point's blog with a description of this new challenge.

The second challenge site Virtual Sketch Date I found while browsing on Empty Easel. I really love this newsletter and was reading the Thursday motivation article by Rose Welty . Went to herblog and found VSD

I have plans for a creative weekend.

Blogging is a lot of work and a lot of fun. You keep learning and
also keep in touch with others that are doing blogs similar to your
own. Recently I suggested to my cousin Bernie that he should start
his own blog and get his work up there... on the web.. he started his
blog .... and through it I saw the options of following and being
followed. So I decided to list the blogs that I follow.... mainly
through subscriptions to their newsletters.... Little did I know that
my up till now anonymous blog .. which up till now was mainly for some very close family and friends... would make me more public.....I am not sure how I feel about this.... I am still quite insecure about my work... but the ball has started to roll and I got a surprise that my name was mentioned in one of the blogs...

On the right hand side of this blog you can see the blogs I follow.....

Some more painting exercises

I have finished the course.... it really came at a bad time.. the month of all the High Holidays....and to top it off the holidays came in the middle of the week so it was weekend...holiday..weekend holiday etc...
All in all I enjoyed the course... there were some disappointments:

I was the only one to post on the board
It was geared to acrylic paints and not for oils... I knew this from the beginning and asked before taking if I could use oils and although she answered yes she hadn't much experience with oils and really couldn't help much.
Aside from technical problems...oils vs acrylic I missed some real criticism and feedback was slim.

I didn't do all the exercises so here are a few more....

Although I didn't succeed in getting all the effects I did learn a lot ... wet on wet is difficult and working on relatively small formats let me experiment and therefore learn more. One thing that I did learn was not to be afraid... the paints won't come up and bite!!!

Hope with the help of these lessons I will become more familiar with the media and what I can do.

Lesson 1

Making a blended sky and making clouds using the dry brush technique. I found this a bit difficult because I am not quite used to painting wet on wet.. we also made sets of mountains and a bit of foreground.

Both were done in oils on 8"x11" 400 gram paper that was coated with 3 acrylic layers. Clicking on the images brings up a larger format.

Later at home I decided that the sea needed work,and wanted to change the land as well. Worked on the window frames as well. Didn't photograph the work at this stage and continued to do more work mainly on the curtains in class.

Have started a new project. Two canvases for Naomi..... may have bitten off more than I can chew this time. Naomi loves the Dali painting, Woman at the window, that was used for a best selling book cover, Sophie's Island, Hebrew edition, which will be my reference image.

Using the motive of a figure looking out of the window at a seascape decided to use as models my daughter and husband. Each on on its own canvas.

Sketch with base color ochre. Sketch of Naomi is very light because I redid her putting her closer to the left side of the window.

Again getting practice in doing portraits I chose the lovely portrait of Mathila's friend. Done in my Canson A4 90grm sketch pad. Done with a 2B mechanical pencil. The tilt of the head was a bit off... but reasonable likeness.

Did three versions of Robin reference. All done in canson 90grm A4 sketch pad.
First I tried out my new sanguine charcoal pencil.... about 20 minutes...
Then I did a fast pencil sketch... about 15 minutes .... and then without the image on my monitor... blotched it with the color.... Lyra watercolor crayons fulfilling the challenge to use our own colors!

This week I started a new canvas. This time a landscape that I photographed from the parking lot of the community center where I take my classes. I liked the morning sun in the back of this house on the hill. I started it at home first toning it with light blue acrylic paint and then drawing the image with charcoal and sanguine charcoal pencil which I sprayed with fixative!!!!

First here is the reference photo I took.

Sue gave us the challenge to work one reference in 2 mediums!!!

First I chose the reference of Sue's Dad for my portrait practice.

Done in graphite in A4 Canson sketch pad.

The meadow lark was done in a fast 15 min pen sketch and a crayon painting.

Also couldn't resist the Kelpie pup... another quick 15 minute pencil sketch.

Last week I started my first, at least to my knowledge,oil painting.last week's post
This week I continued to work on it... really felt that I am swimming in deep water... and not always in control. I have to learn how the paints inter-react.. What each brush can/will do... how to get the tones I want. A lot of trial and error... Dov points us in the direction... and lets us go.....

Reminder of the painting at its first stage.

Started working on the background greens and earth tones and then worked in some of the reds of the flowers.

This is the third stage after adding the second color of flowers and more greens. I feel utterly out of depth... not really in control....

I like the way the flowers are coming but the background is much too busy and I will have to think of a way to unify it. Don't know if I will have the nerve to work at it at home....

WetCanvas is a very HUGE site catering to all types of art. Each media has its own forum with lots of learning threads and challenges, plus a place to show recent works. Up till now my comfy zone has been the WDE Weekly Drawing Events. The folks there are so encouraging and helpful and thanks to those events I have found a great deal of creative motivation. I also am able to learn about different approaches and various media.

I have been lurking around the Drawing and Sketching forum and decided to take part in their weekly drawing events.... I have been doing a few with out posting on the site but last week decided to post. The challenge was drawing clouds. Four reference images were put up. Here is my rendition using graphite pencils.

CAROL LEE: What I see here that is so satisfying is the elements of relationship. How the evergreens on the left relate to the lighter valued trees on the right, and then the layers of light and mid tone in the sky...we get a great sense of depth!

Lots of shots from sunny Florida and Mexico plus her dog Matt that passed away recently and some interesting birds.....her challenge was to try to sketch with our non-dominant hand..... in my case my left....My personal challenge is to do portraits and get a reasonable likeness....

Sketching with my left hand was really difficult but challenging.... will have to try this exercise again!!!!

Here are the portraits: I am getting better with the likenesses but need more practice practice practice so every weekend I will try the various faces that are posted....all were done in my 5x8 inch cheapie sketch book,15 minutes,using just an HB pencil.

I decided that I have to start painting... with a brush.... hadn't bought my oils but had a few bottles of liquid acrylic paint and decided to start with those.
Dov set up a nice still life with a copper teapot and transparent jug, plus bananas,clemintina, and a mug... on a draped cloth..... well it was one big disaster.. didn't even take a picture of it.... so far its safe hidden away in my closet.... before it goes in the trash.

All set with my new oils and canvas 50x70 cm .... thought I would be doing the still life but Dov gave me a print out of Calanits (Anemone) and other wildflowers that he took just yesterday....I was a bit stressed... I feel more confident with a pencil than with a brush....guess that's why I like pastels and crayons.... well nothing else to do but to jump in...

This is just the ground paints... worked in Ochre/brown/white.... next week we'll start with the colors!!!!!

Chloe challenged us to use just two tones and work in darks and light values.
The dog is done on 165 gram drawing paper using watercolor crayons... used yellow ochre and a blue that I don't know the name of because the paper wrapping is long gone!!! Also used black and white for toning....

I will also do the portraits, although I may not post on the forum but will post them here on the blog...

I am really getting interesting in the ability to do some portraits and get a reasonable likeness... its all in the proportions and I have been doing exercises form the book Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards...and from the web... wouldn't it be great to do my grandchildren s's portraits!!!! Well first I want to do my mother.... and in the background some motives from one of her paintings The Japanese Lady.....started to work on a sketch using oil pastel pencils... not the greatest likeness... so I will have to really improve... I worked on white bristol paper ... took this image before going home.... then I took the eraser and tried to fix some of the features... got down to the paper it self... anyway here's my first trial... plus the reference images....

This is one of the earlier image I have of my mother... think this might have been a high school image making her about 18.

Here is a photo of her painting... very bad.... this used to hang in my grandfather's den... its about 2x1 meters ....It now hangs in Yael's apartment and its hard to get a shot because of low light

Now my version... need to work on the tilt of the head plus features... its JUST a start!!!! an idea!!!

I think I will place her lower so there will be more room on the top ...

Thanks Stacy for the great pictures and a little about Ipswich!!!!Looks like a nice city/town you have there.... and a lovely nature center. Stacy challenged us to do some fast 10-15 minute sketches.

Did a few sketches of some of your landscapes.... very hard I must say for fast sketching.... more like scribbles... did them digitally.... I may try some more on my sketch pad... each about 10 min last one 20min[bottom right]

Here is my crayon rendition of Erin... she seems to be this weeks favorite! Sorry I made her a bit older... I know the reason... PROPORTIONS!!!! her eye should be much lower.... done on regular a4 computer paper..... thought I would transfer it to better paper.... used 3 colors yellow/rose red/and turquoise in the palette.....took about an hour!!!

This week I decided to try some figures. My daughter Naomi wanted to paint some nudes and bought two canvases 50x70 cm......which she has now passed on to me.... Dov gave me a few pictures to use as references. First I chose the wrong paper to work on for oil pastels... it was too smooth... and the pastels didn't blend .... also the ear is in the wrong place... in this image and when I tried to fix it it was even worse so I covered the whole ear with black hair..... haven't taken a shot of it... but you can use your imagination....size is 35x50 cm

I found a nice image of Mount Moosilauke in NH and since there was permission to use for non-commercial purposes decided to give it a try. This is the 2.5 hour mark... WIP[work in progress]. Hope to get it to pull together better. Working in oil pastels on canson mocha pastel paper...

Great group of references Chaos!!!! All done in my medium weight Grumbacher sketch pad.

Lily done in soft pastels.... 20 min sketch...5"x5" ...looks a bit brighter here!!

Foliage also a quick 20 min sketch done with watercolor crayons and added water to them ..7"x 5 1/2" didn't turn out so good!!!

The birds 15-20 min a piece also watercolor crayon... no water here!!!! 11"x8"

The doves...about 1 hr 15 minutes.... also watercolor crayons 9"x7"

This weekend I chose to do a symmetrical photo manipulation for the butterfly image and for the challenge which was to draw/paint from your imagination a place to retreat to for relaxing.

Autumm.... morning ...frost in the air.... a quite mountain path.... sounds of rustling leaves... footsteps and the trickle of water ....when I think of a place to relax my mind goes here....to the time I climbed Mount Moosilauke in NH with my daughter....
Lyra watercolor crayons... that I applied water to places... also did some crayon dipping... stopped because it was getting muddy..... doesn't really look relaxing.... first time using these crayons... birthday gift....9.5"x7" 165gr Rembrandt drawing pad.... did a bit of photoshopping.... blurring... original is much more vivid ....the photo before the blur is even better than original ... in the spirit of WDE...Saw,after, a great photo of a path on the mountain site now that isrelaxing. I really have to try and develop the painting from imagination.... Thanks Dominic for this exercise...

Found a great art shop in central Jerusalem and bought several sheets of Canson 160gr mocha paper. Also found some open stock OP's bought a few more colors... new sketch book..and set of pastel pencils... which are more for oft pastel then oil pastels.

I wanted to print out,color print from my very inexpensive printer... but after many tries with no success just took the B&W print.....later found that the color cartridge dried out... because I had default print only B&W.... lesson use it till its gone and then decide to buy another....

Didn't remember the exact colors so most of what was beyond the window was imagination.
Painted using OP on mocha canson paper 165gr.

I may do a bit of tweaking to fix the window frame,try to fade out the orange leaves and add some ,more to the foliage.... After looking at the original reference I saw the there were no leaves on the upper tree, just branches, and orange I remembered was in the foliage in the bottom.

I will have to find a way to make a quick colored sketch to work from for class with out having to run to the printers.... another good exercise....I especially want to work in class on the WDE images which are shown only on Friday so can't get any printed in time for Sunday morning class..... printers are closed on Shabbat [Saturday]

Back to School-Painting Class

Well I guess this is the obvious step after dipping into the WDE's and getting back to traditional painting and sketching.... Yael and Naomi gave me an unusual birthday gift this year... a painting class.. Ruth, she gave me a great set of watercolor crayons, takes a beading course at the Yahud Community Center and suggested I check out the painting class offered there. When I heard they worked mainly in oils I almost panicked out....The instructor is an Israeli Artist,Dov Segev and I will be able to work in my OP's [oil pastels].His site I know the site is in Hebrew but to click on the image no Hebrew needed. !!!So maybe I will graduate to oils at one point... but I like the feel of the pastels and think they are a good transition from sketching and drawing with a pencil to painting with the pastels. So off to another path in my artistic journey.

Started my first class on Jan 20th. Dov put on my table an old kerosene lamp to draw. He wanted to see what I know and don't know. He showed me how to use a paper stump to do the shading... already learner new techniques...
Here is the drawing.

After that he gave me a photo from a magazine and I did a color sketch using my OP's and some of Dov's nice pastel pencils. I later bought a set but the wrong kind... soft pastels... will have to look for the right kind for more detail work....

Wrote out a list of stuff to buy for the next lesson... special colored paper...

First I did the challenge sketching a few references on one page of my 8"x11" sketch pad.

Then I took one of the sketches and cropped it out in Photoshop ...printed it and transferred the sketch to 165gr watercolor sketch pad. I used my new Lyra watercolor crayons and added water to several parts. These crayons have a different consistency then Caran d'ache Neocolor II , but sadly haven't been able to get a full set of these here. Will have to get used to these!!!

Did a digital line sketch of the peppers.. a cropped version and printed it out and started fiddling with some soft pastels... this is the result... on regular printing stock paper.... I now know how to transfer it to better paper using a window as my light source....Rule...Always use best materials!!!!!

I also did a pencil sketch of the river scene.... Need to really work on my tone contrasts...

Digital painting over the original photo changing the squirrel into a Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland for the weekend challenge.

Mottled effect on the background was done by lowering the opacity to let the original photo background peek through!!

WDE December 14

Weekend Drawing Events are posted every Friday by different hosts who put up 16 of their photos to be used as reference sources.. We are to download the images and choose our media and work for a limit of 2 hrs. If the work isn't finished we can post it as a WIP work in progress. This weekend I posted quite late, in fact a few hours before the new images will be posted for the December 21st event.

First a quick digital sketch less than an hour.

The second on a small piece of black photo board done with oil pastels,OP for short.
I still have a lot of work to learn the techniques of this media. it was my third try and I still not happy with the result. Did this in about 1 and half hours.

2.5" x 3.5".....First time working in that small of a format.

Cat was done in oil crayons, Josie was a pencil sketch, Butterfly was an attempt using cutouts from magazines plus crayons.

My cat was a complete disaster but I may try her technique another time!!!

Gourd..5.5"x8" sketch pad. First done with watercolor crayons limited colors... painted [smeared would be a better term]with some water and then did some more crayon work with my oil crayons... also about an hour.

Started this in Jerusalem from a B&W printout... It was very similar to another entry as being almost spooky.. I hope to finish this graphite sketch.

The challenge was fusion.. so I did two digital manipulations using the reference sources of a hand with bracelet and galaxy image. Both done using Photoshop.

Also did a few digital sketches here is just one.

WetCanvas I first discovered WC for reference images in February 2005.... but took me quite a while to really appreciate the scope of this site. Since the beginning of August 2007 I have been taken part in their WDE,weekend drawing event, trying to get back to traditional drawing and painting. This is where the Jumping In comes in..... In this blog I will put up some of the work I have been doing... both traditionally and digitally, mainly for myself as an online dairy of the progress I am making. So it will here that I will be posting some of mywork .. some good and some not so good....all in the process of learning

A bit of background

Graduated from RISD quite a long time ago... during the years I didn't use the art training that I received there. Found it difficult to juggle running a home,children and work. Also I sort of brainwashed myself into thinking that mywork wasn't that good so what's the point.

However in 2002, on a visit to the states, my late brother,Eugene, introduced me to photoshop elements and my journey in digital photography and manipulations started. I now have a full version of PS plus on my third camera, a Canon S60, and enjoy taking pictures and working with them on PS. I joined a great forum at myjanee
Did lots of her tutorials,took part in many challenges (even won some trophies), took part in few book study groups.

At one point I took some course in digital painting and photography courses at LVS and did lots of courses (free) at HP learning center. Learning computer skills and working digitally has been a lot of fun, especially with a great Wacum graphic tablet, which by the way I got when my sister decided she wanted a new and smaller version, but I still feel the need of traditional methods. So here I am jumping in or perhaps DIVING would be a better description.
